Data Methodology

We do the data engineering so you don't have to.

BallotBase pulls directly from government disclosure systems and applies the filtering and deduplication logic that makes the numbers actually usable.

🏛️
FEC Schedule A & B
Individual contributions and disbursements pulled directly from the FEC API. Top-line totals use official FEC committee totals — not aggregated receipt rows — so the numbers are always accurate regardless of filing volume.
📋
Cal-Access Deduplication
California amendment filings create duplicate rows that inflate totals if naively summed. BallotBase tracks amendment chains and counts only the most recent version of each filing. Schedule E only for expenditures, F460 only for receipts.
Smart Caching
Data is cached and revalidated on a rolling basis so dashboards load instantly. Background fetches keep data fresh without blocking your analysis. First load for a new committee typically takes under 10 seconds.
